The 13 teams involved in the water played a tournament in the Bergvall system, with Belgium, Ireland and Spain having a bye in the first round. After the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, the Olympic champion was determined in the final (July 17, France v Belgium). In another knockout round, the teams that lost to the Olympic champions played for the silver medal. The loser of this round then played in the bronze game against the teams that had lost to the losing finalist. ----Programs were bound, now loose, therefore minor damage to the fold.
